Is there short term disability?

Is there short term disability?
Question: I'd like to see information about what the different states can offer if a person with MS has to go on Short Term Disability.  Is there help out there?  And what kind?

Advice Panel Answers:
Gwen says:
The state of Kentucky does not offer any type of short term disability plan. You must apply for social security disability, and there is no short term type, only permanent.
Kentucky offers a work incentive program, once you are on SSI or SSDI, then you may make an attempt at working again and still receive benefits. This helps to ease the disabled person back into the workforce on a trail basis, to see if they can truly do the work.
Most people have a short term disability plans at their jobs or have private disability plans thru private insurance's.

You may however apply for food stamp or WIC without being qualified to receive SSDI or while awaiting the final decision on your case. My advice would be to talk to your doctor, if he/she thinks you will be off work for more than a year, discuss with them the fact that you will be applying for social security disability do not wait to long, it can take from 3 months to several years for a final approval from the social security office.

Cindi replies: Regarding disability:  I'm on SSD, the state I live in,
didn't seem to offer me much in the way of disability benefits. My husband is working, so we didn't qualify for too much. I had my own work history prior to the MS causing enough of a disability that I was no longer able to work. SSD from Social Security can be difficult to obtain, they do have a website, www.ssa.gov  that you can check.  I know that California offers a disability program for those who have been employed there. I don't know any of the specifics. You may want to do a search, on Alta Vista perhaps and look up any state you're interested in. Just type in the states name and disability benefits. You should come up with something. Unfortunately most of us don't think too much about disability until it's too late. Hope you can find the information you need.

J.V. Williams answers: Yes there is help out there. I do not know where you live but I do know where ever you are you can find a local chapter of the National MS Society. You may have to drive 50 miles to get to a meeting if you want to go to one. I have never been to one myself but I know they do help with funding of anything from medicine to support foundations and they will even get you things like canes, walkers wheelchairs and my friend got a scooter from them. They send out the latest news in a letter to you monthly. I hoped that helped. -J.V.Williams
