Pregnant with MS

Pregnant with MS.
Question: I was wondering could anyone give me information on being pregnant and having ms? I am curious because I am 20 and would like to have kids. I have had ms for 4 years now and it'''s starting to take a toll on me. If anyone could answer this question it would be great. Also, after you have children, how do you keep up with them? Thanks a lot, Casey

RESPONSES:
STACY:
Casey, I have two boys (4&7) and have wanted to have another. My doctor says that it is okay to have children but there are some issues. One is if you are on any medication (ABC or otherwise) you must stop taking it prior to becoming pregnant. During pregnancy you risk of a relapse is very small, but immediately following delivery your risk goes up so if you are on an ABC drug you should begin again immediately. Therefore, you should not breastfeed your child.

AS for keeping up with your children there are give and takes. My house is not always as clean as it should be and we might not always have gourmet dinners but you do the best we can. Your kids will understand if mommy is tired or needs to rest. Also your husband will help.

DEB: I think your physician can best answer your question regarding medication and pregnancy. As for keeping up with the kids - the key is to prioritize and delegate. A newborn can be very draining as you're usually sleep deprived. This is the time to call on a family member or friend to help you regularly with the baby, even if they just baby-sit for a couple of hours in the afternoon so you can rest. Toddlers require even more attention and, again ask for help. As children get older they can take on some responsibilities for you and ease your load. You may want to re-think working outside of the home once you have children as trying to hold down a full time job and be a mommy is taxing enough without MS! Best of luck to you!
