George V. Moorhead 11/12/1927-03/26/2008

Note from Lorna: My father, George Moorhead, was an integral part of MS MOMS coming to fruition. When I was not allowed to run a support group for women and mothers through the local chapter of NMSS, Dad encouraged me to push forward with my ideas of helping others with multiple sclerosis. He also encouraged me to use my writing skills to express , with my dry humor, life with MS. If he had never been there to support, encourage, and help with funds, MS MOMS would have never happened.

I love you Dad and I miss you dreadfully.

My father George Van Moorhead, age 80, died peacefully Wednesday March 26, 2008, at home with my husband and myself at his side.  Born in Eugene, Oregon on November 12, 1927, Dad received his early education there.  After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oregon, he completed his Masters of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dad’s career as a health educator with the Hawaii State Department of Health earned him the Sippy award from the American Public Health Association.  Moving to California in 1974, he steered Emergency Medical Services from its infancy in Sacramento and surrounding counties  to, the newly formed State of California Department of Emergency Services.  He was proud of his work in reducing response times in emergencies and for initiating the position of paramedic as a viable health provider of emergency health care services.

Text Box: Dad competed in the caber toss at the 1984 Sacramento Scottish Games and landed himself a front page photo in the paper.

Dad was also deeply in touch with his Scottish heritage and became an accomplished Scottish Country dancer.  He performed with the Ar Doigh group of Sacramento.  After a trip to Scotland in 1975 where he tossed the caber in the Newtonmore Highland games, Dad competed in the Seniors category in many games in California.

His love of art and architecture expressed itself in his talent for set design – first in a little theatre group in Hawaii and later in the many Scottish themed sets designed for Sacramento area events where his country dance troupe performed. George designed and built the Castle Gate which leads into the Sacramento Valley Scottish Games each year.

His four adult children Sharon Davis of Oregon, Darcy Moorhead, Curtis Moorhead and Lorna Jean Moorhead of Sacramento, survive George. He leaves 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Monday April 14th at Celtic Cross Presbyterian 5839 Dewey Drive Citrus Heights beginning at 7pm with a reception to follow.

George requested those attending honor his ancestry by wearing tartan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to MS MOMS, 3022 Rosemont Dr, Sacramento, 95826.
